Internal Medicine

Dr. Alan Keister was born and raised in Amarillo, TX. After high school, he studied at Baylor University graduating summa cum laude with a B.A. in Biology in 1992. Alan then went to University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and graduated with honors in 1996. He pursued further training at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and completed his residency in Internal Medicine and was honored to serve as Chief Resident 1999-2000. Alan moved back to Amarillo to start his practice in general internal medicine. He also continues to teach medical students at Texas Tech University Medical School. Dr. Keister often returns to Baylor and teaches in the US Health Care class.

During medical school, Alan began traveling to Mexico for medical mission trips and those experiences set a course for the future. After residency, he began to travel regularly to Central America serving the people of Nicaragua and Honduras. Those travels helped inspire the dream of Heal the City Free Clinic in Amarillo. Heal the City is a free clinic that provides medical care to the uninsured of Amarillo and connects them to existing medical resources. The vision of the clinic is to communicate the love of Christ to patients and volunteers alike. The clinic has enjoyed success due to collaborative relationships with local foundations, hospital systems, medical and pharmacy schools, and the generous Panhandle community. The chronic care clinic at HTC enables access to care for the uninsured and provides comprehensive care for chronic illnesses and behavioral health needs.

Dr. Keister has been recognized for his work with Heal the City. He received Texas Medical Association’s John P. McGovern Champion of Health Award. He also was awarded the Texas Education Agency’s Heroes for Children Award. The American College of Physicians awarded him the Community Service and Volunteerism Award. He won the 2018 Baylor Line Foundation George W Truett Distinguished Service Award. In 2019, he was honored with American College of Physician’s Oscar Edwards Award for Volunteerism. In 2023, he and his wife, Vicki, were awarded the Pro Texana Medal for community service from Baylor University.

In his spare time, Alan enjoys spending time with his wife and 4 daughters and expanding family. Besides volunteering, Alan enjoys traveling, hunting, fly fishing, reading, and cheering for the Baylor Bears.
